Vintage Pyrex Flameware #6283 Double Boiler (Set 1)
Vintage Pyrex Flameware #6283 Double Boiler (Set 1)
The iconic double boiler! Pyrex's Flameware Double Boiler is simply one of the best double boilers you will come across. It's a must-have for anyone who loves to bake or candy making. The classic example of this double boiler's kitchen prowess is that it allows you to see what is happening inside the double boiler from all angles, making tasks like melting chocolate less likely to end up a burned mess.
Pyrex produced its Flameware line from the 1930s through the 1970s, so all pieces you find today are at least 45 years old. Made of aluminosilicate glass and features removable handles (simply unscrew the stainless steel collars) for easy cleaning. These Pyrex pieces are quite durable and meant for regular use.
A note on use and care... Due to both age and material this vintage glassware is still susceptible to "shocking." You never want to put anything cold into a hot double boiler (bottom pot or top insert). Fill your bottom pot with room to lukewarm temperature water and slowly bring to a boil. When done working with your double boiler, allow to cool down before washing - and do not use cold water! If you need to rinse right away, ensure the water you use to wash is warm as this will prevent the thermal shock, which causes shattering.

Production Time Period: This particular double boiler is likely from the late 1950s through the 1970s. Advertisements I've seen from the 1960s feature this shape. The earlier pieces have a rounded bottom, different lid style, and have a blue tint to the glass.
Glass Shape: Double Boiler with Insert and Glass Lid

In pristine vintage condition. No chips or cracks.
How to Care For (For a Cool Double Boiler): Hand wash in lukewarm water with mild detergent. Rinse in same temperature water and hand dry. Do not place in dishwasher.
